Le Velo is a two-storey cafe and bike repair shop that is located in western Sydney’s Wentworth Point. The client Sue and Andy Baker requested a space that maintained the original structure of the building. For the new design, the brief was to harness bold colours, evoke a grunge/graffiti aesthetic, use contemporary art, use recyclable materials and include a space to showcase photography and other artworks. With this in mind, it was important to touch on design elements that also complemented the existing structure. To elevate the space it was imperative to take advantage of the already existing floor-to-ceiling windows and remove any curtains or blinds blocking the view and natural light of the harbour.
The ground floor features eclectic furniture, a mix of comfortable seating, and a dynamic colour scheme of red, pink and blues that exudes energy. To embrace the industrial-chic aesthetic exposed brick walls, polished concrete floors, and suspended bike displays were used to establish a unique identity for the venue. The second level continued this and acted as a second dining space for patrons to use. The documentation set provided below includes furniture plans, reflective ceiling plans, sections, elevations, bar and staircase plans, sections, elevations and detail callouts.
