This exhibition explores the depths of thalassophobia and how to immerse visitors into an experience that skillfully elicits the fear and fascination associated with the vastness and mysteries of the ocean. To break it down, thalassophobia is a fear of the ocean, strong waves or large bodies of water. It is a fear response triggered by a single, specific stimulus. Common side effects of Thalassophobia are dizziness, anxiety, a sense of doom and a racing heart. Thalassophobia can be considered a common phobia, however, it may vary dramatically in severity from person to person.
Currently, there is no found estimation of how many people deal with this phobia. As we know rapid heartbeat is a common side effect of Thalassophobia. With this in mind, vibratory technology is used to produce a faux heartbeat through the walls of the exhibition to again, heighten the experience. And of course, the exhibit itself perhaps takes on the shape of a large tidal wave. Immersive technologies including animatronics and audio that mimics deep-sea noises are also used to further throw the viewer into the nerve-racking experience.
